Hello and First Episode Notes 03/17/2011

I used to be an artist. Or at least that's how I thought of myself and how I approached things. I was always trying to push my own limits and break down the common structures to try to come up with something new or at least unique. I did things just to do them and never thought about how they would fit or where they might go.

Some of those things got some attention and suddenly I was writing songs for particular bands and writing for particular publications and everything started taking on structures and limits and containers to fit in. Now when I want to be creative it's always toward a pre-defined purpose or outcome. Projects are conceived in advance and I create units to fit them.

Hed Cheez is an attempt to get back to pushing my limits. I want to work through your ears to create a space in your head. I'm fiddling with my equipment, learning it as I go. I'm using whatever dexterity I have on various instruments. I'm playing around with audio collage and comedy and writing and music. I want to put together a loose but entertaining half hour at a time. I want it to sound like you are following my mind wandering.

First Episode:

It's going to take some time to get away from structures so I'll just get it out of my system.

The Intro was fun to make but I hope to do different Intros for each episode.

SEESPAN is just a mood setter. Shockingly ugly ignorance orchestrated a bit to give it a theatrical quality.

AFGHANISTAN is a weird thing that has been floating around in my head for a few years. It's one of those things I sing to my cats when we're alone. It's the stuff that's not supposed to leak out in company. Now it's taken a shape and lost some of it's distraction power inside my head.

HARGUS LANGDON is an evangelical character I invented for comedy shows. The Inspirational fillers is a spot I put together for WNCX that never got used. Thought it shouldn't go to wast. There's a couple more that may show up later. That's Bob Vitolan announcing.

WITIHIN WITHOUT WHATEVER - I used to be a pretty good trumpet player. I haven't touched it in more than twenty years. I got it out and this was what I've got left. It's not one of those instruments you can quit on and go back easily. My stamina is gone and my control is lousy, but man, does it feel good to play a trumpet! Maybe I'll try to get in better shape on it.

WAKE UP is some fun with my drum machine. This is actually my ring tone now.

SPANK MY MONKEY - I wrote this song in the early nineties and think I might have played some version of it once or twice out. It has never gelled enough to record until now. It kept morphing from a sleazy Delta Blues thing to some kind of Tom Waits, Captain Beefhart, Swans thing in my head and I could never pin it down. It fell into place here and i like this version.

DON'T is something I swiped from Facebook. Logan Firestone posted a public service announcement with puppets. It seemed to fit.

Go to the mouth and let me know if you like anything. I'm making no promises as to where this might go. If you like a journey, subscribe. I'll be getting better with the equipment and on the instruments over time and hopefully will push into some new ground soon. I'm also going to dump some old stuff into the mix that never left my house or has faded into the past so far it might as well be gone. Thanks!
